Holy Family Catholic Primary School embraces the e-community with a virtual conference with nine of its partner schools
On June 29th 2011 Holy Family Catholic Primary School in Surrey together with its 8 other partner schools broadcasted a live assembly over the web using the Create Compete Collaborate e-community website, to launch the start of their P.L.A.Y project.
The project entitled P.L.A.Y. (Participation, Learning and Activity for the Young) has 3 strands which the children will work on in the lead up to and beyond London 2012.
The 3 strands focus upon
- The Olympic and Paralympic values – Raising our pupil and parent awareness of the values and embedding them into our activities.
- Playground Games and Sporting activity for all. In particular using these areas to develop leadership skills and placing special emphasis on those with low self esteem. In time pupils from the nine schools will work together to create new games of their own.
- Development of I.C.T. skills of the children. These will extend to web-cam, video conferencing, animation and visual arts. Children will develop collaborative styles of work and be asked to work in an innovative manner that is original and of benefit to all who take part.
Nine schools were engaged in the project launch which was broadcasted from the school hall at Holy Family Catholic Primary School. Representatives from each school were about present a short 5minute assembly to the audience at Holy Family Catholic Primary School as well as the eight other schools that were tuned in online. Creative Junction Director Jessica Jhundoo said “This was an excellent example of how the e community website can be used to support international projects. It’s a free resource and anyone seeking to create an international project involving young people should take advantage of this and run with it. It is truly an inspiration to see a school so actively involved with it.”
Head teacher Martin Vassello and school teacher Justine Holt have been exploring the ecommunity and received some in house training from BT seconded Miles Smith a few months ago. The schools could see the potential in the website and how it can support the global work they are looking to expand into. Martin stated “All of our schools are registered with Get Set & We believe this to be a project with great potential. We will extend into global areas, with one of our schools already working with a school in Barcelona.”
