Collaborations! / New Gold

"New Gold" performance @ Bucks New University, 3 June, 2010.

Performed by Signdance Collective.

New Gold is one of the four Collaborations! projects for 2010.

Delivered by Signdance Collective and in conjunction with the Creative Campus Initiative, New Gold is an ensemble dance, theatre /music and digital media performance project looking at contemporary attitudes to ‘competition and winning’ through the medium of signdance. It explores a range of themes, including: concepts of attainment; the history of Gold and what gold means to us; the significance of Gold in contemporary times; the idea of being "number one" and finding success in original ways; the athlete compared to the artist in terms of winning and losing; and how losing can in certain situations, paradoxically, sometimes becomes another way to win.

In line with the aims of Collaborations!, New Gold involves a number of young deaf and disabled artists working with Signdance’s established artists. Paralympic athlete, Naomi Riches, who won bronze in the rowing event in Beijing, has also been interviewed to inform the creative process. New Gold will be inviting young people to respond to and inform the development of the work at a series of schools’ workshops from September – November and will be performed at festivals in Slovenian and Austria.
