What does the 'Para' in 'Paralympic' stand for?
As part of The Campaign! Project young people from the St Francis Ward at Stoke Mandeville Spinal Injuries Unit were inspired by the answer to this question.
Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire is often referred to as the 'birthplace of the Paralympic movement' and grew from sport being used as part of patients rehabilitation. As the Paralympics is coming to our country in 2012 we think more people should know more about these games and what they stand for
The 'Para' in 'Paralympics' does not stand for 'Paraplegic' or 'Paralysed' it stands for 'Parallel' as the 'Parallel Olympics' is run alongside the Olympics.
The young people worked with professional musician Tom Billington to explore the word Parallel and wrote a song 'Parallel Lines', exploring what it means to be 'parallel' and asking if this is a negative or positive image. They collaborated with young people from a similar ward in America to expand their ideas and support the creative input.

The launch of this song and video coincides and is part of Creative Junction's Open weekend event for Create Compete Collaborate (CCC).
For the young people on the Campaign! projects, they want as many people as possible to learn more about the Paralympic Games, the relevance of Stoke Mandeville in the South East and celebrate the achievements and abilities across our communities.
